1 step forward, 3 steps back.

My Power of Attorney just barely made it to FTIA for today's shipment of docs to Guatemala. That's the good news.

The bad news is that my dossier review is complete and I have 3 documents that have to be redone. I made a stupid mistake - copy and pasted the wrong name in the notary section. It was right on one document, but wrong for the 3 others.

Those 3 will have to go through the whole process again - signing, notarization, county certification, state authenication and consulate authentication... And of all the docs, one was my doctor's letter which means I'll have to make another appt to see him.

What does 1 gallon of love look like?

The duck sleeper, a toy/blanket that says a little prayer, 2 cameras, a note to his foster mom in English and Spanish (thanks altavista and uncle tio), and just a tiny bit of room for some photos and maybe I'll find a little something to send my foster mom, as well.
Thanks to Emily for taking this down along with the others! I'm so glad it worked out so you could go down this early!

My first visit trip is scheduled!

I'll be in Guatemala for 5 days in August! 9th - 14th! I can't wait!

Planning my first visit trip.

When adopting from Guatemala the children are sometimes cared for by foster families. All the children with my agency are with foster families. This is one of the reasons I selected them.

Adopting families are permitted to travel to Guatemala to visit the child while the process is in progress. Most families I know have been down and though it has been difficult to return home without their child, they have all enjoyed spending time with them at such a young age.
You are also permitted to send a package down to your child if you would like. Some send through other travelling families with your agency and others send through a shipping company.

Tonight I am preparing my first package and planning my visit trip. I'm still working on the package, but I know I will include a sleeper and toy I purchased last week, 2 disposable cameras for the foster family to capture pictures of Dominc's first few months and a letter to the foster mother.

Do you think he'll be embarrased when he's older that I dressed him in ducks?

The call

Here's what a referral call looks like -

I was on the phone with my coordinator trying to remember everything she said. We were at the fishing pier and of all the things my dad packs in his vacation fishing bucket, a pen is not one of them.

It seems like most referral calls come in the evening, so I was not expecting the call at 10am! We were in North Carolina on vacation and had just arrived at the fishing pier. I called my mom immediately after I hung up and we were both crying. A girl crying on the phone is not a common site at the fishing pier. I got lots of odd looks! :)

When we got back to our condo the pictures were waiting in my email. My parents, brother, niece and nephew were all there to see Dominic for the first time with me.

I had to wait 24 hours to receive my information packet! Here I am picking up the referral packet. Beach hair and all... I never thought I would post pics of me online with no makeup and my hair not done - but who knew I could look this happy?!?!

I sat there in the car and read all the documents.

I thought I was prepared. I wasn't.

It's a boy!

Born 5/21. 6 lbs 4 oz. 19 inches.

I got the call while we were taking my niece and nephew fishing this morning. More to come when I return....

No news...

Still waiting. It doesn't sound like any of the chat girls got a call, not that they've posted about anyway...

Maybe next week after I get back from vacation. Until then....

Step 3 - The Referral

Once the agency has a referral they will contact me with a photo and information about the child. I will have basic information including birthdate, weight and basic medical results.

I will also receive my attorney's name and information on the foster mother. Some children are placed in hogars (orphanages) in Guatemala. My agency maintains a group of wonderful foster mothers to care for the children while the adoption is in process. These families have up to 2 children in their care at a time. This personalized care is included in the adoption fees I will submit to my agency once I accept a referral.

To accept the referral you have to complete several documents including a Power of Attorney form authorizing my attorney in Guatemala to act on my behalf in the court system there.

And the winner is.....

That's the one I picked too!

So we've already established my frugal nature. Who knew this crib bedding was SO expensive?? This set is $199. I wouldn't spend that much on adult bedding - and this is 1/4 the size! So, my very talented Mother is going to make this one. I would say help me make it, but sewing is not on my list of talents. [I tried to Scotch tape a belt loop back on to my pants last week. (No, I'm not kidding.) I finally dug out a safety pin since I just knew the tape would fall off in front of one of my customers.....]

If nothing else, this project will keep us busy for the next few months, right?

No update on the waiting list. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks. No movement since my math post below - there are still 3 chat girls in front of me. We're thinking they may get the call tomorrow. Maybe next week or the week after for me....

I'm NOT buying anything this week, but....

Although we don't have a single optometrist in the family, somehow whenever we all get together and there is a choice to be made we always hear, "Is this better? or is this better?"... "A or B?"... "1 or 2?"...

Very similar to when you have an eye exam. I'm not sure where it came from, but I'll blame it on the wacky sense of humor that seems to come out when my immediate family gets together.

So, in that spirit.....

Is this better?

#1 - Patchwork blue

#2 Boats

or is this better?

#3 Blue Airplanes

#4 Under the Sea

So this is what that semester of being a math major got me...

Let x = the total number of people from my agency on the wait list for a boy.

Let y = the percentage of people from my agency on our chat group.

Let z = the number of people from the chat group that are on the list ahead of me.

Assume y equals 25%.

It is thought that z equals 3. The general theory is that there are lurkers on the board except when someone announces that they are the waiting list ahead of you, then everyone will de-lurk to post.

x * y = z

x * .25 = 3
x = 12

Which means......

It's all just a guess and part of this silly math we play while waiting in various stages of the adoption process. Just wait until we get to PGN math....

So, I still don't know how close I am to getting a call. Maybe another 2 weeks? I was extremely anxious the first 2 weeks, but I've calmed down considerably over the last day or so.

Anyway..... I'll continue to wait! :)

I'm generally not one for prayer, per se, but asking you to meditate or light a candle doesn't seem to have the same effect.

For those of you on this journey with me and who will be involved in our lives, please take a moment to think of his birth mother at this time. I may never know her cicrcumstances or her story, but I hope that she has the support she needs during this difficult time and is at peace.

She will always be close to our heart.

At least I've been trained well.

My nieces and nephew have prepared me for 18 years of SquarePants. SquarePants is what you get from sitting 3 hours to watch that 3 1/2 minute dance routine that they've been practicing for the last 6 months.

Adrian did an AWESOME job on her dance. She even held up half of her team while being the base for the backbend train!

And Jacob has officially graduated kindergarten!

I've told them they're getting a new cousin, but I don't think it will sink in until we have the referral photos. They did help me pick out his first baby blanket the day I sent in my application. Although Adrian begged me to change my request to a girl so we could get a pink blanket....

My 1st Mother's Day card

While we're waiting....

I got my first Mother's Day card this year from my friend R. It says, "There are two kinds of family... the one that we are given and the one we create for ourselves. Happy Mother's Day."

Friday, June 1, 2007

Hi, my name is Nicole and I am "the frijoles"....

I have a friend from Mexico who once told me I was "the frijoles" or "the beans"..... I didn't get it. Apparently this is slang in his area for someone who is tight with their money. Apparently this characteristic of mine was not bound by the language barrier. Don't get me wrong, I spend, but I'm always looking for a bargain.

2 weeks ago was a very successful garage sale day.

In addition to being conservative with my money, I'm slightly germaphobic with things that come into my house or may one day enter my little one's mouth. So here's what my bathroom looked like on Sunday.

I know. It's too early for me to be shopping, but I couldn't pass these bargains up!
