Halloween preview

Come visit us tomorrow for the big reveal! Nanny was asking today when we'll be posting. Maybe we'll make her wait until she shows her costume first!

"Hey, mister. Your eyes are as big as mine.... "

The company we keep....

I was hanging out tonight with two of my favorite people - my niece and nephew. We went out shopping for their Halloween costumes and went to Frisch's for some dinner and our annual tradition of pumpkin pie for my niece. As we were finishing I decided to check my e-mail on my cell, not expecting much. Guess what I had.... PRE-APPROVAL FROM THE US EMBASSY!

It has just so happened that they have been with me on most of the major milestones of the adoption process - the day I mailed my application in they went with me to buy Dominic's first baby blanket; the day I got my referral we were on vacation together and then tonight when I got my Pre-Approval notice we were together, as well!

Hopefully I'll hear that I'm out of Family Court soon and then on to PGN!

Still waiting....

We're still waiting on Pre-Approval from the US Embassy. The rumor mills continue to churn and the output from our Embassy continues to be inconsistent.

Sept - Pre-Approvals were taking 60 days
late Sept - Pre-Approval taking about 2 weeks
early Oct - Pre-Approval issued in less than 3 days!
***My case is submitted Oct 5***
Oct 22 - An announcement is made that Pre-Approvals will now take up to 60 days again
Oct 23 - My friend, J, is issued Pre-Approval in 19 days

So it could be tomorrow, it could be December. Do you think I'll learn to become more patient during this process?

Doubt it...

If you can't be in Guatemala....

bring a piece of Guatemala home to you. Here are the 2 new pillows I got on my last trip:

They are recycled from the collar portion of the traditional Mayan shirts many women wear in this area.

Our Goodbye...

We had a wonderful dinner with Dominic's foster family before they took him back home. I really enjoying spending time with them learning about their culture and them as individuals. Even his foster sister and foster father are excited to see him - this is not just a job for his foster mother, Dominic is truly a part of their family. I hate what they will go through when he finally comes home with me. The weekends when I visit are hard enough for them.

Off to plan my next trip. Maybe Novemeber? :)

Pics from the cameras I left with Dominic's FM

I left several cameras with Dominic's foster mom and she returned 2 of them to me this trip. I couldn't wait - I had to have them developed yesterday at the mall near the Marriott. Was I in for a wonderful surprise.... My sister and I laughed so hard in the camera store we were crying!

I'm guessing this is a traditional Guatemalan bath?! Look at all the suds!

And no skimping on the powder!

Our last day...

It's time to go again. It's not any easier this time. I can already see how much Dominic has changed over the last 2 months since I visited the first time. He's holding his head up, reaching for things, chewing on everything, much more vocal and he is starting to roll over (not all the way yet!)...

We took some more pictures this morning and have a surprise for Nanny for Halloween! Tonight we'll go to dinner with Dominic's foster family and then my sister and I will head to the airport around 4am. I've been very happy with the Marriott and will probably stay here again. Hoping to be back in about 6 weeks or so...

Today is a U.S. holiday, so no PA for me today.... Happy Columbus Day!

Thank you.

Family and friends,
Thank you for sending your letters to our elected officials to help support us! Our voices ARE being heard. Last week the Ortega Law was passed in Guatemala which means the adoption process will change. However, because of the tremendous response from in-process families and their supporters, it sounds like there will be a strong push to allow in-process cases to complete.

This means there is still hope for Dominic to come home!

Continue to check the JCICS Guatemala 5000 initiative for ways to support us, we'll need it all the way to the end!

1st Haircut...

Dominic was NOT happy about this, but we made it out with only one small injury to the stylist's finger, lots of tears and a great looking "do"!

I think he would have chosen a different finger if he knew what he was getting into....

Maybe this won't be so bad if I can eat this thing...

The first few snips...

The finished product. How handsome is he???

Some shopping in Guat and news on DNA!!

Yesterday we visited the shops next to the hotel, picked up the traditional Guatemalan letters for Dominic's room and bought our first teething ring at the pharmacy. Dominic is chewing on everything - fingers, blankets, his bottle, etc. It seems a little early, but maybe he's teething all ready...

Today we went out to the handicraft market near the airport and picked up a few things. It was very nice and not exactly what I expected - not crowded or cramped like the market we visited in Antigua. We saw some new items there and I got a hand woven runner that will match both my room and Dominic's.

After the market we went to Hyper Paiz - the Guatemalan Wal-Mart. I picked up a few Spanish books, puzzles and flashcards for Dominic and of course we had to load up on snacks and coffee for our friends at home.

Dominic slept most of the time we were out shopping and napped off and on most of the evening. He's been a little fussy, but much better than the first day!

Yesterday I received an e-mail that my agency got the DNA results - 99.99% match! My copy should be home waiting for me in the mailbox. What does this mean? We're now waiting on Pre-Approval from the U.S. Embassy. Once we receive that and our case moves out of Family Court in Guatemala, it's on to PGN, or final court, for us!

Safe and sound in Guatemala!

My sister and I have arrived! The trip was smooth and uneventful.... Dominic's foster mom brought him around 2. He's been pretty fussy, but our first night was pretty rough the last trip too.

More tomorrow - off to bed.
